What will actually happen on the day I come to the Bet Din to receive my GET?
The GET delivery is a ritual ceremony with important legal consequences. It is important that each stage of the ritual is done properly to make sure that all of the legal requirements are met.
When you come to the Bet Din, you will be given a script to follow the ritual. There are 3 Rabbis at the Bet Din, and the session will be led by Rabbi Chaim Weiner. The ceremony is conducted in English, and you should have no trouble following it.
We will ask you a number of questions to make sure that you are voluntarily participating in the ritual – as a GET is only valid if you receive it of your own free will. Once we are assured that everything is in order, we will deliver the GET.
The GET was written especially for you, and has the details of both the Husband and wife. We will open the GET and read it to make sure that everything is in order. Once this has been done, we will refold it and prepare it for delivery.
When we delivery the GET you will need to stand. The GET is placed directly into your hands. You may not wear any rings or other jewellery that will prevent the GET from touching your hands. After you the Get is placed in your hands you should hold it tightly and walk with it a few steps, to show that you have received it.
After you have received the GET, it is then returned to the BET DIN – who read it again and the Rabbis confirm that it all is in order. The GET stays with the Bet Din. The Bet Din then issues a certificate to show that a GET has been issued. You will need to produce this certificate if you wish to remarry in a Jewish ceremony.
You may be accompanied throughout the ceremony. We advise you to come with a close friend or relative for support.
What is the cost of a GET, and how do I make my payment?
The cost of the GET procedure is £380. It is up to the couple to decide how this is shared between them. Half of the cost is due before the GET is written, and the other half before the delivery. When the cost is shared, the husband pays the first half and the wife the second half.
Payment details are available HERE.
